Odisha is experiencing a sharp drop in the Minimum (night) temperatures, with mercury dipping below 10 Degrees Celsius for the first time this year. Cold Wave conditions may likely prevail in the State during the days ahead, official sources said on Monday.

G. Udayagiri recorded today a minimum of 8.4°C, while Daringbadi witnessed 10°C, marking record lows for the region.

In the State Capital, Bhubaneswar, temperatures fell below 15°C for the first time this year, with the lowest recorded at 14.8°C. Across the State, 16 cities reported night temperatures below 15°C.

According to the Meteorological Department, Phulbani recorded 12°C, Jharsuguda 11.6°C, Rourkela 12.5°C, Keonjhar 13.8°C, Hirakud 15.4°C, and Sambalpur 15.8°C. Experts attribute the drop to decreasing humidity and cold, dry winds from the northwest.

Authorities warn that the State may continue to experience a cold wave in the coming days and advise residents to take necessary precautions. The Meteorological Department has issued an alert for citizens to stay warm and monitor their health during the chilly spell.

When contacted, the Director of India Meteorological Department (IMD) regional centre in Bhubaneswar, Manorama Mohanty said, “Minimum temperature has observed appreciable fall by about (-2.0°C to -4.0°C) at one or two places over the districts of Interior Odisha and at a few places over the districts of South Coastal Odisha and no large change at elsewhere over the districts of Odisha.”

“They were markedly below normal by about (5.0°C to 6.0°C) at one or two places over the districts of Odisha, appreciably below normal by about (-3.0°C to -4.0°C) at one or two places over the districts of Odisha, below normal by about (-2°C to-3.0°C) at a few places over the districts of North Odisha and normal at elsewhere over the districts of Odisha,” the IMD Director expressed.

Notably, dry weather is very likely to prevail over the districts of Odisha. However, Cold Wave conditions are likely to prevail in isolated pockets of Cuttack, Angul, Jharsuguda, Kandhamal, Sundargarh, and Khordha. This prediction by IMD is valid from 0830 hrs IST of November 11 to 0830 hrs IST of November 12.
