Bhubaneswar overbridge accident: Car falls onto house, no fatalities reported

A major road accident was reported in the Odisha capital, Bhubaneswar, early Monday after a car crashed through a barricade on the Sishu Bhawan overbridge and plunged down from the flyover, narrowly missing residents of nearby houses.

The incident occurred at around 5:30 am under the jurisdiction of the Capital Police Station. According to preliminary information, the car lost control while travelling on the overbridge, rammed into the roadside barricade and fell from a considerable height.

After hitting a tree below the flyover, the vehicle was flung onto the roof of a nearby house with an asbestos structure, causing panic among local residents. The impact resulted in extensive damage to the car as well as public infrastructure.

Driver Rescued, No Loss of Life

The driver survived the crash and was rescued from the damaged vehicle. Police confirmed that no fatalities were reported in the incident. The driver is stated to be safe, with officials suggesting that the deployment of airbags helped reduce the severity of injuries.

However, the accident caused significant damage, including the breaking of nearly a 10-foot-long stretch of the road barricade. The front portion of the car was also badly damaged in the crash.

Residents Recount Harrowing Moments

Local residents said they were woken up by a loud crashing sound. One resident, whose house was hit by the vehicle, described the terrifying moments following the accident.

“This is my house where the car landed. Thankfully, there were no deaths despite how severe the accident was. When the driver was rescued, he appeared to be heavily intoxicated. When the car fell, a brick hit one of my relatives who ran out with my young son. A paralysed elderly woman lives in another house whose doorway was blocked by the vehicle, and a youth sustained head and other injuries after bricks fell on him while he was asleep,” the resident said.

Police Probe Underway

Police personnel reached the spot soon after receiving information and initiated an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident. Preliminary findings suggest that the driver may have been under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.

Traffic movement in the area was temporarily disrupted following the incident, but normalcy was restored later.
