Police identified her husband, Deepak Rout, as the prime accused. Three others, Binod Bihari Bhuyan (son of Deepak’s maternal aunt), Jatia, and Sambhu Mahant, have also been named in the chargesheet for their alleged involvement.

According to investigators, the killing stemmed from a financial dispute involving money that Shubhamitra had lent Deepak for their formal marriage ceremony. The chargesheet also noted that soon after her death, Deepak purchased an insurance policy worth Rs 1,25,00,000, allegedly with the intention of claiming the amount. The document traces evidence from the couple’s early interactions to the sequence leading up to the murder.

Police concluded that the crime took place on September 6, when Deepak allegedly strangled Shubhamitra, transported her body in a car and buried it in the Ghatagaon area of Keonjhar district. Commissionerate Police later exhumed the body.

Premeditation and Earlier Allegations

During the initial investigation, some individuals reportedly suggested that Deepak might have acted under sudden provocation. However, the extensive chargesheet, running over 600 pages, indicates a premeditated plan to kill Shubhamitra. The three co-accused, Binod, Jatia and Sambhu, allegedly assisted in planning the murder and were aware of Deepak’s intentions, including discussions on disposing of the body.

Reports also highlight renewed suspicion surrounding the death of Deepak’s first wife, which had earlier been termed an accident. Investigators suspect a link to an insurance policy exceeding Rs 1 crore, mirroring the alleged motive in Shubhamitra’s case.

Similarly, although Deepak and Shubhamitra had married in court, the social ceremony had not been conducted. Deepak had reportedly taken Rs 25,00,000 from her for the traditional marriage. When she demanded her money back, he allegedly murdered her, according to the chargesheet backed by police evidence.
