2 arrested for attempted rape on minor girl in Odisha’s Kandhamal

Police have arrested two youths in connection with an attempted sexual assault on a minor girl within the Belghar police limits of Kandhamal district. The arrests were made yesterday following a complaint filed by the victim’s family, official sources said on Wednesday.

According to the police, one accused, identified as Sushil Nayak, was arrested earlier and has been produced in court. Later that night, another accused, Nitesh Nayak, was also taken into police custody. The information was confirmed today by Baliguda Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Shubham Bhosale.

Investigators said the accused had allegedly attempted to assault the minor and later tied her hands and legs before abandoning her in a forested area. The girl reportedly spent the night in fear and managed to free herself the next day (February 3) before returning home and informing her family.

When contacted, Baliguda SDPO Bhosale stated, “Acting on the FIR, we had formed a special team and arrested two accused persons. We have forwarded them to court. A medical test of the victim has also been conducted on the victim. The girl is safe now.”

“The two accused were known to the minor, and they hail from a nearby village. They have been identified as Sushil Nayak and Nitesh Nayak, both are majors and are aged above 18 years,” the senior cop expressed to OTV.

Worth mentioning, the minor girl had gone to a nearby river to attend nature’s call and relieve herself when two miscreants abducted her. They had reportedly taken her to the forest area, where they attempted to rape her.

Following the written complaint at the Belghar police station, an ‘attempt to rape’ case was registered, and an investigation was launched. Police said further legal action is underway as part of the ongoing probe.
