Nabarangpur: The image that crosses one’s mind at the very thought of a politician is that of a Khadi clad ‘Neta’ moving around in expensive vehicles or leading morchas in the streets. However, Nityanand Gonda, the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the tribal heartland of Umerkote in Nabrangpur district is an abrasion.
These days, Gonda is seen working in his ancestral farmland, a paddy field, with a sickle in his hand. He works alongside other daily wagers to cut the ripe crop while his wife helps to tie those in bundles and mount in stacks.
The farmer’s leader, as he prefers to call himself, shyly tells OTV, “Working in the farmland helps me to remain grounded. At the same time, it boosts the morale of my fellow farmers,” says Gonda who otherwise is a lawyer by profession.

Despite taking a plunge into electoral politics, or taking up legal profession for a livelihood, Gonda says his love for farming runs in his blood. “I belong to a family of farmers. The profession deserves due respect,” he says.
While the MLA was seen cutting, sizing and wrapping the crop, his wife, a teacher by profession, helps him in the work.
She says she found time to help her husband as the school has been shut due to the pandemic situation.
