Ganjam: The Convalescent Plasma Therapy to treat COVID-19 patients commenced in Ganjam district on Tuesday.
District Collector Vijay Amruta Kulange inaugurated the new facility at the MKCG Medical College and Hospital. In the first phase, six blood plasma brought from plasma bank set up at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack will be administered to patients in four COVID hospitals of the district.
“Plasma units have reached Ganjam which were immediately handed over to the medical officer of Tata COVID Hospital. The plasma will be administered to Covid-19 patients in the same way just like the therapy is being carried out in Bhubaneswar.”
Terming the commencement of the therapy a life-saving step, the collector said, “I am hopeful that our doctors’ team will successfully use it to cure and save the lives of patients.”
As on July 21, Ganjam's Covid tally touched a whopping 5991, almost one-third of the positives in the State, after 225 new cases of SARS-nCoV infections. The active cases in the district stand at 2057 while 3871 patients have recovered from the disease. The district has also registered 59 deaths due to Covid-19 and four non-Covid deaths so far.
As Ganjam is witnessing a steady rise in the coronavirus cases, the State government has formulated a special COVID-19 management strategy in order to reduce COVID-19 fatalities and strengthen overall monitoring mechanism.
Plasma therapy was rolled out for the first time in the State on July 16. Odisha government has informed that the treatment which is being touted as a game changer in reducing fatalities due to Covid pandemic is showing positive results. Four patients administered with blood plasma from recovered Covid patients are reportedly showing signs of improvement.
