Malkangiri: A Maoist carrying a reward of Rs one lakh on his head surrendered before the police in Odisha's Malkangiri district with a desire to return to the social mainstream, an officer said on Monday.
Mahadev Madkami, who had joined the banned CPI (Maoist) in 2015, surrendered before Malkangiri Superintendent of Police Risikesh D Khilari on Sunday saying he had realized the futility of the violent path adopted by Naxals, the officer said.
The Odisha government had announced a reward of Rs one lakh on the head of the surrendered Maoist, the SP said.
Operating as an active member of the Darva division of the banned outfit in Malkangiri and neighbouring areas, he was allegedly involved in several cases. Several criminal cases are pending against Madkami in different police stations in the state.
Madkami decided to give up arms and join the social mainstream as he realised that the violent path adopted by Naxals was of no use. He was also impressed with the development works being implemented in Malkangiri district, police said, adding that Madkmi was also disappointed with the behaviour of senior Maoist leaders.
Establishment of Border Security Force (BSF) camps at Temurupalli, Kartanpalli, Tentuliguma and Madhupadar in Tulsi area along the Odisha-Chhattisgarh Border has also contributed to his move to surrender, they said.
Madkami will be provided with monetary assistance as per the Surrender and Rehabilitation Scheme of the Odisha Government. He will also get financial assistance for building house, pursuing studies and undergoing training in a trade/vocation of his liking, the SP said.
