Bhubaneswar: In a fresh development in the case involving the recovery of the headless body of a woman near Daspur on the outskirts of the city, the Commissionerate Police on Thursday claimed to have made headway in the case by tracing the severed head and identifying the victim.
"We have identified the victim following a confirmation from her family members. Still, we have to scientifically establish her identity,” said Bhubaneswar DCP Umashankar Dash, adding, “We have detained two accused persons in connection with the murder."
On Thursday morning a police team along with forensic experts, led by the DCP, took the two accused to the spot at Bharatpur forest on Andharua-Daspur stretch from where the headless body had been recovered.
The severed head was found after an hour-long search in the nearby Bharatpur forest with the help of the accused. The place is around 2 km away from the spot where the body was dumped.
Meanwhile, the chopped head has been sent for post-mortem. DNA profiling of the head and the body will also be done to confirm whether they are of the same woman or not.
Police had earlier announced cash reward of Rs 50,000 for anyone helping to identify the woman.
The investigating officials had also released posters detailing her physical attributes and appealed to citizens to share information on the deceased.
The body of the middle-aged woman had been recovered along Bharatpur-Chandaka Road near Dasapur village on the outskirts of State Capital on February 4.
