Delhi: The Special CBI Court in Delhi on Wednesday reserved its verdict on quantum of punishment against Dilip Ray, the former Union Minister of State for Coal and others, who were convicted in the coal block allocation case, till October 26.
On October 6, the Rouse Avenue Court had convicted Ray, two senior officials of the Ministry of Coal at that time, Pradip Kumar Banerjee and Nitya Nand Gautam, director of Castron Technologies Ltd (CTL) Mahendra Kumar Agarwalla and Castron Mining Ltd (CML) in the case pertaining to allocation of 105.153 hectares of abandoned coal mining area in Brahmadiha coal block in Giridih district of Jharkhand to CTL in 1999.
Special Judge (CBI), Bharat Parashar held Ray guilty of offences under Sections 120-B and 120-B/409/420 of IPC and Sections 13 (1) (c) and 13 (1) (d) of Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.
Ray, a hotelier, is a founding member of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and was the minister in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Government. After he left BJD in 2002, he joined the Congress and remained in the party from 2004 to 2008.
In 2002, Ray was however, elected to Rajya Sabha as an Independent member with the help of BJP MLAs.
Later, he joined the BJP in 2009 and was elected as an MLA from Rourkela constituency in 2014.
