Bhubaneswar/ Sundargarh: A youth was arrested on Friday for allegedly making a fake Facebook account of one of his friends, a girl, and posting ‘indecent remarks’ along with her mobile phone number.
The accused identified as Binay Kumar has been arrested under sections 66 (c) and 67 of the Information Technology Act and under section 465 and 469 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) by Bondamunda police.
According to reports, the victim and the accused were studying together at a private coaching centre when the latter had developed a ‘one-sided’ affair.
However, Binay was upset after the girl stopped talking to him and in a bid to avenge this humiliation, he decided to defame her.
Later, he created a fake Facebook account in the name of the girl, posted some objectionable remarks along with her personal phone number in January this year, police said.

Unaware of the fake Facebook account, the girl’s social life started to get affected after she started to receive several indecent phone calls from unknown numbers at regular intervals.
Perturbed over such harassment, the victim then lodged a police complaint in connection with the incident.
Basing on the allegations filed by the victim, police had launched a probe. Later the police zeroed in on the accused after getting credible information from Facebook Law Enforcement Agency, California.
With the assistance from Facebook, police then traced the mobile phone used to create the fake account in the name of the victim. The mobile phone and SIM card of the accused have been seized, police said.
The accused on the other hand admitted that he committed the crime by ‘mistake’.
“I had wanted to teach a lesson and out of fun had created the account. But later I forgot to close or delete the phone number of the girl,” said the accused.
