Odisha is expected to experience widespread rainfall over the next seven days, with gusty winds accompanying showers in several regions, according to a forecast issued by the Regional Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar

A low-pressure area is likely to form over the west-central Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas around May 27. This system is expected to bring enhanced rainfall but is unlikely to intensify into a cyclonic storm.

No Cyclone Threat

The development is being closely monitored, though experts clarified that there is no cyclone threat and urged the public not to believe in any misinformation regarding extreme weather events.

Responding to several social media posts claiming that the low pressure will intensify into a cyclone, the IMD Bhubaneswar regional director, Manorama Mohanty, clearly termed such reports as false.

“A low pressure is likely to form around May 27. There is no need for people to panic as there is no possibility of intensifying into a cyclone. IMD has not given any forecast regarding cyclone. Whatever is being shared on social media is completely wrong,” she added.

There Is Time For Monsoon Onset Over Odisha

Speaking to the media, the Director of the Bhubaneswar Regional Meteorological Centre stated that although rainfall will intensify in most districts over the coming week, the official southwest monsoon is yet to arrive in the state.

The southwest monsoon has set in over Kerala. On monsoon onset over Odisha, she said that it will take some time.

“As of now, there is no possibility of monsoon onset over Odisha. It will happen only after the southwest monsoon covers the entire north-eastern states and the southern peninsula,” said Mohanty.

The department has advised citizens, especially those in coastal and low-lying areas, to remain cautious due to the possibility of moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by gusty winds. Farmers and fishermen have been requested to stay updated with official advisories and plan their activities accordingly.

As Odisha moves into the monsoon transition phase, the Meteorological Centre continues to monitor weather patterns and assures timely updates to ensure public safety and preparedness.
