Odisha is enduring an unrelenting heatwave, with temperatures steadily increasing since the arrival of February. Mercury levels have been steadily climbing as February continues, with certain regions witnessing a significant rise.
Over the past week, temperatures have surpassed 35°C in ten cities within the state. Meanwhile, some areas including Malkangiri and Bolangir have experienced a peak of up to 36°C. Other regions like Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, and Sundargarh followed closely, with temperatures recorded at 35.9°C while Hirakud and Bhawanipatna registered temperatures of 35.5°C.

Meanwhile, according to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), a depression over the Bay of Bengal is responsible for the dense fog observed in the coastal regions of Odisha this week. The impacts of a cyclonic belt across the Bay of Bengal have led to increased fog density along the coastal areas of Odisha.
This meteorological configuration has led to pervasive foggy conditions, affecting visibility across these areas.
In its mid-day bulletin, the IMD mentioned, “Minimum temperatures observed appreciable rise at a few places over the districts of Coastal Odisha and no large change at elsewhere over the districts of Odisha. They were markedly above normal at many places over the districts of Coastal Odisha, at a few places over the districts of Interior Odisha, appreciably above normal at a few places over the districts of Odisha and above normal elsewhere over the districts of Odisha.”
