Rain to lash Odisha from Oct 23; is there any cyclone threat?

The India Meteorological Department predicts the formation of a cyclonic circulation over the North Andaman Sea around October 20, with a low pressure area forming over Central Bay of Bengal by October 22. This system may cause significant rainfall in Odisha from October 23 to 25, with maximum impact on October 24. Potential risks include landslides and urban flooding. While no cyclone trajectory is confirmed, Odisha remains cautious.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted formation of a cyclonic circulation over the North Andaman Sea around October 20. 

As per the weather office’s prediction, a low pressure area is likely to form over Central Bay of Bengal around October 22 and it will intensify into depression around October 24.

Under the influence of the system, Odisha is likely to experience rainfall activities from October 23 to 25. Odisha will experience maximum rainfall on October 24.

Is there any cyclone threat to Odisha?

In its forecast, the IMD has further said that due to such rains, there could be landslide chances over Hilly areas in this region and flooding over the low-lying areas. 

Also, there are chances of urban flooding in coastal cities, riverine flooding in the east flowing rivers of Odisha and West Bengal. 

Even though the IMD has not predicted anything about the further trajectory and intensity of the system, people in Odisha are apprehending a possible cyclone as October is prone to natural disasters. 

Earlier, IMD DG Mrutyunjay Mohapatra had said October is prone to cyclone and the system is being closely monitored.
