Rainfall in Bhubaneswar

Odisha is likely to experience a spell of heavy rainfall with intense thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong winds over the coming week, reports said on Monday. The substantial rainfall is forecast across the state till May 31, due to the formation of a low-pressure area over the west-central Bay of Bengal and the adjacent sectors.

Meanwhile, a yellow warning, indicating the potential for thunderstorms, has been issued throughout the state. The yellow alert has been issued for today, with heavy wind potentially reaching speeds between 40 and 50 kilometres per hour in some regions.

Weather Outlook

Despite some circulating misinformation, meteorologists have clarified that the formation of a low-pressure area over the west-central Bay of Bengal and adjacent regions is not forecasted to escalate into a cyclone.

The Bhubaneswar Regional Meteorological Centre has confirmed that no cyclone alerts have been issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

“The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has not issued any cyclone alerts, stating that current developments do not support cyclone formation,” weather scientist Sarat Chandra Sahu said, adding that the downpour was due to pre-monsoon and the monsoon is expected to advance towards Odisha very soon.

Monsoon Progression

Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon is expected to advance further into Odisha after progressing into the northeastern states.

According to experts, the monsoon's progression into Odisha is delayed, trailing behind its onset in the northeastern states of India. Residents have been advised to stay informed and take necessary precautions during this meteorological event.
