At a time when farmers across the state are under severe mental stress after their hopes of bumper harvest were dashed due to the unseasonal rains, forecast of more rain in the coming weekend has further added to their woes.

The weather department has projected more rain in Odisha for two days on Saturday and Sunday. As per the weather office, light to moderate rainfall is expected in several districts, particularly in the northern and northwestern parts of the state.

Weather expert, Umashankar Das, revealed that light to moderate showers are anticipated on Saturday and Sunday and attributed it to a western disturbance, which can frequently result in precipitation on both the 28th and 29th of this month.

The prospect of rain poses a critical challenge for farmers, who are already reeling under severe loss due to the untimely low pressure over BoB, a few days back. The anticipated weather could impact crop management and harvesting plans during a crucial period for farmers, who are heavily waiting for favourable weather conditions.

Farmers are advised to take necessary precautions to minimise potential damage. Authorities have suggested employing traditional methods of crop protection as well as modern techniques to shield the produce from likely showers.

Meanwhile, the state government has announced necessary compensation to all the farmers who are reeling under severe loss. Revenue Minister Suresh Pujari on Tuesday said Odisha government is committed to compensating farmers for the losses.

“It is unfortunate that natural calamities are not sparing Odisha. Another unseasonal rain has caused huge damage to paddy crops, another one is approaching. However, there is nothing to worry about as insurance companies have already been directed to prepare to pay compensation to the farmers. The Agriculture and Revenue departments are working. We have already started assessment of crop loss,” Pujari told media persons.
