Almost a month after making onset in Odisha with good downpours, the southwest monsoon has so far remained mostly weak in the State.
Odisha has received a cumulative deficit of 21 percent rainfall between June 1 and July 13 as compared to the long term average during the period, the Regional Meteorological Centre of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Bhubaneswar said on Tuesday. The total average rainfall received in the State during the period stood at 273.6 mm.
The State as a whole recorded 17 % deficiency in rainfall during the month of June.

As many as 17 districts namely Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Bolangir, Boudh, Sonepur, Angul, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Jharsuguda, Keonjhar, Jajpur, Bhadrak and Mayurbhanj received deficient rainfall between 59 percent and 20 percent during the period.
Similarly, the amount of rainfall stood between 19 percent deficient and 19 percent excess of the normal in the rest 13 districts of the State which includes Malkangiri, Koraput, Nuapada, Bargarh, Sundargarh, Balasore, Dhenkanal, Cuttack, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khordha and Nayagarh.
In the past 24 hours, the average rainfall received in the State stood at 8.3 mm which is 27 percent less than the normal figure, said the IMD.
Kalinga station in Kadhamal district received the maximum 44.0 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours followed by Malkangiri (43.4mm), Batagaon in Sambalpur (40.0mm) and Talcher (40.0mm).
Taking to its Twitter page, the weather forecasting agency informed that the southwest monsoon covered entire country by July 13 after a delay of almost five days. The monsoon usually covers the country by July 8.
