The Cyclonic Storm Jawad over westcentral Bay of Bengal will most likely turn into a deep depression tonight before nearing the coast of Puri on December 5, 2021, informed the Director General of Indian Meteorological Department, Mrutyunjay Mohapatra on Saturday.

Speaking to OTV, Mohapatra said, “The cyclonic storm has recurved northwards since this morning and it is likely to lose its intensity and near the Puri coast as a deep depression instead of a cyclonic storm as predicted earlier.”
As far as the wind speed is concerned, the IMD has revised its earlier predictions. “The wind speed is likely to remain under 50-60 kmph and the gusting speed of the wind is likely to go up to 70 kmph,” said the IMD DG, adding that the rainfall activities will increase gradually from Saturday evening and some parts of the coastal Odisha may receive very heavy rain.
Odisha Special Relief Commissioner, Pradeep Jena also shared the information on the microblogging site Twitter. Jena said that the cyclone may weaken by the time it reaches Puri coast to deep depression as seen from MeT Department’s latest bulletin.
“The Cyclonic Storm moved slightly northwards with a speed of 4 kmph during past six hours and lay centered at Lat. 16.2°N and Long. 84.9°E, about 230 km southeast of Vishakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh, 340 km south of Gopalpur (Odisha), 410 km south-southwest of Puri (Odisha) and 490 km south-southwest of Paradip (Odisha),” he added.
“It is likely to weaken gradually and move nearly northwards during next 12 hours and then north-northeastwards along Odisha coast reaching near Puri around the noon of December 5, as a deep depression,” informed Jena.
“Subsequently, it is likely to weaken further and continue to move north-northeastwards along Odisha coast towards West Bengal coast,” he tweeted.
Besides, addressing a presser in Bhubaneswar, weather expert Umashankar Dash said, "There will not be a major impact of the cyclone on the interior Odisha and only the coastal areas will witness some kind of wind." On the other hand, Met has issued an advisory for the residents of the Twin Cities (Bhubaneswar, Cuttack) in view of the cyclone Jawad.
