The depression over south-east Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm today, informed Regional Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar on Friday.
"The Depression over southeast Bay of Bengal moved west-northwestwards with a speed of 32 kmph during past six hours and lay centred at 11.30 pm of December 2, 2021, over the same region near Latitude 12.0°N and Longitude 87.5°E, about 770 km south-southeast of Vishakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), 850 km south-southeast of Gopalpur (Odisha) and 920 km south-southeast of Paradip (Odisha),” said the Met Centre.

"It is likely to move northwestwards and intensify into a Cyclonic Storm over central parts of Bay of Bengal during next 24 hours. It is likely to reach west-central Bay of Bengal off north Andhra Pradesh-south Odisha coasts around December 4 morning. Thereafter it is likely to move north-northeastwards," added the Met Centre.
Rainfall Forecast
Under the influence of the system, light to moderate rain or thundershower is very likely to occur at many places over the districts of south coastal Odisha and at a few places over rest districts Odisha on December 3.
Similarly, light to moderate rain or thundershower is expected to occur at most places over districts of coastal Odisha and at many places over the districts of interior Odisha on December 4 while light to moderate rain or thundershower is very likely to occur at most places over the districts of north coastal Odisha and at many places over rest districts of Odisha on December 5.
The Met Centre has also issued yellow warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall at one or two places over Ganjam and Gajapati districts with heavy rainfall at one or two places over Koraput, Rayagada, Puri, Jagatsinghpur and Kendrapada district till 8.30 am on Friday.
Similarly, orange warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall has been issued for Kendrapada, Cuttack, Khordha, Nayagarh, Kandhamal, Rayagada and Koraput while yellow warning for heavy rainfall has been sounded for Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur and Malkangiri district on December 4.
On December 5, orange warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall has been issued for Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Jajpur, Cuttack, and Puri district while yellow warning for heavy rainfall has been sounded in Keonjhar, Angul, Dhenkanal, Nayagarh, Khordha, Ganjam and Gajapati districts.
Impact Expected
- Major damage to thatched houses/ huts.
- Breaking of tree branches, uprooting of trees.
- Minor damage to power and communication lines.
- Localized Flooding of roads, inundation and waterlogging in low lying areas and closure of underpasses mainly in urban areas of the affected region.
- Occasional reduction in visibility due to heavy rainfall.
- Disruption of traffic in major cities due to waterlogging in roads leading to increased travel time.
- Minor damage to Kutcha roads and vulnerable structure and wall collapse of vulnerable kutcha houses.
- Localized Landslides/Mudslides in hilly areas
- Damage to horticulture and standing crops in some areas due to inundation. Damage to banana, Papaya & Moringa (Drumstick) trees.
- It may lead to riverine flooding in some river catchments (Nagavali, Rushikulya, Vanshadhara).
Action Suggested
- Total suspension of fishing operations.
- Check for traffic congestion on your route before leaving for your destination.
- Follow any traffic advisories that are issued in this regard.
- Avoid going to areas that face the waterlogging problems often.
- Avoid staying in vulnerable structures.
- Harvest the ripen crops like Paddy and Horticultural crops and also secure the harvested crops securely from the damage due to rain and strong winds.
- Harvest of matured paddy crop and the harvested paddy should be shifted to safer places. Also harvest the rabi vegetables like cauliflower and cabbage if heads are ready to use.
- Do arrangement for drainage of excess water from standings crops in growing stage and vegetable fields.
- Postpone sowing of rabi crops like Green gram, black gram and Mustard and vegetables like potato, onion and coriander.
- Provide support to young fruit plants like Papaya and Banana and vegetables like ridge gourd. Cover the vegetable nursery with white polythene.
- Keep the livestock indoors during rainfall if possible keep them loose inside the shed. Keep feed for 3-5 days, in case of any emergency.
Wind Warning
Squally wind speed reaching 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph over east-central Bay of Bengal from December 3 morning. Gale winds speed reaching 65-75 kmph gusting to 85 kmph likely to prevail over central Bay of Bengal from the evening of December 3 and gradually increase becoming 90-100 kmph gusting to 110 kmph over northwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal from the morning December 4 for the subsequent 24 hours.
Squally wind speed reaching 45-55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph likely to commence along and off North Andhra Pradesh-Odisha coasts from the midnight of December 3 and increase gradually becoming 70-80 kmph gusting to 90 kmph from morning of December 4, for the subsequent 12 hours.
Sea Conditions
Sea condition would be high over central Bay of Bengal on December 3 and high to very high over west-central & northwest Bay of Bengal from the early morning of December 4 for the subsequent 24 hours.
Sea condition will be rough to very rough over along & off North Andhra Pradesh – Odisha coast from the mid-night of December 3 and become high to very high from the afternoon of December 4, for the subsequent 12 hours.
Fishermen Warning
Fishermen have been advised not to venture into southeast and adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal till December 3, west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal and along and off north Andhra Pradesh-Odisha-West Bengal coasts till December 5.
