Clearing the UPSC Civil Services Examination and entering the Indian Police Service (IPS) is one of the toughest challenges in India. It requires years of dedication, consistency, and sacrifice. But can humiliation alone push someone toward such a daunting goal? It sounds like the script of a film, yet it is a real story. A police constable, once ridiculed by his superior, turned that very insult into his driving force and rose to wear the IPS badge.
Humiliation That Sparked a Turning Point
In 2013, M. Udaya Krishna Reddy joined the Andhra Pradesh Police as a constable. He came from a humble background, raised by his grandmother after losing his parents, and had studied in a Telugu-medium government school. Life was never easy, but he had aspirations.
The turning point came in August 2018, when a Circle Inspector mocked him in front of nearly 60 policemen, sarcastically asking whether a “mere constable” could ever become an IAS or IPS officer. That public insult left Reddy shaken- but instead of breaking down, he resigned from service the very same day and resolved to prove his worth.

The Struggle, Failures and Breakthrough
Reddy’s resignation was not even accepted immediately. His superiors tried to hold him back by marking him absent and issuing a deserter notice. But he was determined. He began preparing full-time for UPSC, leaning on the support of his grandmother, uncle, and mentors.
The journey was far from smooth. He failed three attempts at UPSC, but his resolve only grew stronger. Finally, in 2023, he secured AIR 780 and was allotted the Indian Railway Management Service. Even then, he was not satisfied- his eyes were fixed on the IPS.
He attempted the exam again while in training and this time achieved AIR 350, a rank that secured him a place in the Indian Police Service.
Today, Reddy not only celebrates his personal achievement but also dreams of serving the people and even starting a helpline for stray and injured animals.
Harshest Insult Turned to Foundation of Success
From being humiliated as a constable to earning the prestigious IPS badge, M. Udaya Krishna Reddy’s journey is a powerful reminder that determination can turn even the harshest insult into the foundation of success. His story stands as an inspiration for thousands preparing for UPSC and for anyone who dares to rise above circumstances.
