The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has accelerated its efforts to restart the suspended Indian Premier League (IPL) after India and Pakistan announced a ceasefire on Saturday. With 12 league matches and four playoff games pending, the league could resume as early as May 15, aiming to conclude by its original deadline of May 25.
BCCI’s Accelerated Plans: Double Headers and Venue Shifts
According to reports by The New Indian Express, the BCCI has directed all franchises, except Punjab Kings, to regroup at their designated venues by Tuesday.
As per preliminary reports, Chennai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad are shortlisted as primary hubs, while Dharamsala, the site of a disrupted match, may be dropped due to security concerns. To meet the deadline, the BCCI is planning frequent double headers.
Additionally, Punjab Kings’ home games will shift to a neutral venue, which is yet to be finalised.
Overseas Players’ Return: A Logistical Challenge
Amid plans for a restart, recalling international players remains a hurdle, as many departed after the league’s abrupt suspension on Friday amid border tensions.
However, franchises are coordinating with stars like Gujarat Titans’ Jos Buttler and Gerald Coetzee to ensure their return. Further, the BCCI is also liaising with the Indian government for travel clearances and safety assurances, added the reports.

Dharamsala’s Uncertain Status and Revised Venue Strategy
Notably, last week’s Punjab Kings vs. Delhi Capitals match in Dharamsala was abandoned after a blackout, prompting teams to evacuate via road and rail.
Meanwhile, broadcasters initially limited operations to Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Chennai, but now aim to retain original venues, excluding Dharamsala. Kolkata’s Eden Gardens, slated to host the final, and Ahmedabad, set for three matches, remain key fixtures.
Playoff Cities and Remaining Fixtures
Hyderabad and Kolkata are confirmed playoff hosts, with the final at Eden Gardens. Lucknow, Jaipur, and Delhi will stage one match each. The BCCI awaits government approval to finalise schedules, emphasizing stakeholder collaboration with franchises, broadcasters, and authorities.
