Talented cricketers from humble backgrounds are often unearthed in cash-rich Indian Premier League (IPL). Mumbai Indians (MI) cricketer Vignesh Puthur is the latest to join the ranks.

Stellar Show

The 24-year-old wrist-spinner from Kerala hogged the limelight in MI's opening game of IPL 2025 against Chennai Super Kings (CSK). He bowled brilliantly to capture three wickets in his first three overs. He dismissed CSK skipper captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and explosive batters Shivam Dube and Deepak Hooda in the process.

The left-arm spinner was unafraid to flight the ball. He managed to deceive some of the best players of spin with his well controlled flight and guiles and impressed several fans and experts in the process.

Braving All Odds

Vignesh is a resident from Malappuram in Kerala. His father, Sunil Kumar, is an autorickshaw driver, and his mother, KP Bindhu, is a homemaker. However, Vignesh has come a long way with his hardwork, dedication and determination by braving all odds including severe despite financial constraints.

Though Vignesh initially started as a medium pacer in college-level cricket, he turned a spinner later and never looked back. He has played U-23 cricket for Kerala. However, he is yet to represent the state at the senior level.

MI Unearthed Vignesh

Mumbai Indians scout found the potential of Vignesh as a utility spinner on the basis of his performances in the Kerala Cricket League. He was bought by MI in the IPL auction 2025 for Rs 30 lakh.
