A minor argument while drinking tea turned into a fatal stabbing in Bhawanipatna town of Kalahandi district, sources said on Friday.

The incident occurred near the municipal office, where a youth identified as Satyanarayan Rai was attacked with a knife by one of four unidentified persons, and the youth succumbed on his way to the hospital.

According to police sources, the shocking incident unfolded near the Bhawanipatna Municipality office, where the youth was stabbed to death following a minor dispute late last night. The deceased was a resident of Bahadur Bagicha Pada in the town.

Satyanarayan was drinking tea along with a few of his acquaintances when an altercation broke out. The situation quickly escalated, and one person allegedly attacked him with a knife.

In the stabbing, Satyanarayan was critically injured and was rushed to the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH). However, he succumbed to his injuries during the transfer.

The Town Police Station has begun a probe into the matter. However, no official statement has yet been released by the police regarding the motive or identification of the attackers.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community, raising concerns over public safety and increasing incidents of violence over trivial disputes.

“My elder brother and his two friends had gone yesterday to drink tea at around 11.30 PM. Four others were present there (near the tea stall). They (the four others) scolded my brother and his friends. When asked whom they scolded, the four indulged in a scuffle by holding the shirt collar,” the deceased’s brother, Shivam Rai, expressed.

“In the meanwhile, one of them (the accused) turned around and stabbed my elder brother from behind, leading to his death,” the deceased’s brother stated.
