Tension erupted in Bhadrak on Monday after a woman gave birth to a stillborn baby, with family members alleging that a faulty ultrasound report led to the death of the foetus.
Following the delivery, relatives of the woman and locals staged a blockade by burning tires and demanding strict action against a diagnostic centre.
According to reports, Basanti Raut, a resident of Radhanga village under Dolasahi panchayat of Bhadrak district, had undergone an ultrasound at a private diagnostic centre a few days before. The report allegedly stated that her six-month-old foetus was healthy, moving and active.
However, based on the same report, doctors at the Bhadrak District Headquarters Hospital’s new maternity wing advised immediate admission.
Soon after, Basanti gave birth to a stillborn male child. Shocked by the turn of events, the family questioned the hospital, only to be told that the foetus had likely died in the womb four days earlier.
Locals Demand Accountability
“This is sheer negligence. The scan said the baby was alive and healthy. If the ultrasound had given the correct report, timely medical care might have saved the child,” said a relative of the deceased.
He also added that the diagnostic centre had a history of providing erroneous reports and claimed that it functioned without any medical protocols.

Action Demanded
Dozens of locals gathered at the protest site, demanding a thorough probe and strict action against the diagnostic centre for providing inaccurate medical information. A sit-in was staged with family members holding the stillborn on the road.
Meanwhile, the Bhadrak Town Police have launched an investigation into the incident. While officials confirmed receiving a complaint, no statement has yet been issued by the diagnostic centre in question.
