A celebratory wedding procession took a tragic turn in Odisha’s Dhenkanal district after six participants suffered an electric shock, leaving one dead and five others critically injured. The incident occurred on Saturday night at Kuangasahi under Tumusingha police limits in Kamakhyanagar block.
According to eyewitnesses, the wedding party was dancing joyfully to DJ music when the vehicle carrying the sound system reportedly came in contact with an overhead electric wire in the middle of the road. The live wire passed current to the DJ system, and those who were either on or near the vehicle suffered immediate electric shock.
Disturbing visuals captured at the scene show individuals collapsing one after another as the electric current surged through the equipment. The celebratory mood instantly turned into panic and chaos as locals rushed to the rescue.
All six victims were initially taken to the nearby Anlabereni Community Health Centre. One of them, whose condition was critical, was later shifted to the Dhenkanal District Headquarters Hospital, where he was declared dead.
The remaining five are undergoing treatment and are said to be in serious condition.
Local authorities and police have launched an investigation into the incident. Preliminary reports suggest that poor handling of electrical safety near public utilities might have led to the tragedy.
The shocking event has cast a pall over the village, where a day meant for celebration turned into mourning.
