Mining major Vedanta has begun the process of acquiring land in Dhenkanal, Odisha, for setting up a massive 3 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) aluminium smelter, a top company executive confirmed on Wednesday.

The proposed ‘green aluminium’ smelter is expected to generate over two lakh jobs, both directly and indirectly.

While speaking to reporters at ALUMEX India 2025 in New Delhi, Rajiv Kumar, CEO of Vedanta’s Aluminium Business said, “We are moving ahead with plans to establish a new aluminium plant in Dhenkanal with a capacity of 3 MTPA.”

Currently, Vedanta’s total aluminium production capacity is 3 MTPA. With the new facility, the company aims to double this to 6 MTPA.

“Land acquisition is progressing well, and we are optimistic about the project’s development,” Kumar added.

The investment, he said, would be significant, given the capital-intensive nature of the aluminium sector, and the project is likely to take three to four years to complete.

Vedanta is also expanding its billet manufacturing capacity, currently at 580 kilo tonnes, with plans to double it to meet growing demand from the aluminium extrusion industry.

In addition, the company is planning an aluminium park in Jharsuguda, Odisha, to attract downstream industries and create a robust ecosystem for value-added manufacturing.

ALUMEX India 2025, the country’s first dedicated aluminium extrusion exhibition, is hosting over 200 exhibitors and an estimated 25,000 visitors from across the value chain.
