Tension gripped Cuttack after a truck crushed a woman home guard to death on the busy Chhatra Bazar area on Thursday morning, triggering local outrage and police action.
The victim, identified as Manorama Panda, was working with the Malgodown police station and had just finished her morning marketing when a speeding truck fatally ran her over.
Morning Errand Ends in Fatal Accident
According to eyewitnesses and preliminary reports, Manorama Panda was returning home on her bicycle after shopping for vegetables when the incident occurred around the Taladanda road stretch in Chhatra Bazar.
A truck reportedly hit her from behind and crushed her under its wheels before coming to a halt. She died on the spot due to the severity of the impact.
The accident led to palpable tension at the scene, with bystanders and local vendors raising an outcry over the driver’s recklessness and the state of traffic control in one of Cuttack’s most congested commercial zones.
Police Respond Swiftly, Vehicle Seized
Officers from Malgodown Police Station quickly arrived at the location and seized the truck involved in the fatal crash. The vehicle has been taken into custody, and the driver is expected to be interrogated as part of the formal investigation.
The Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) also visited the accident site to assess the situation firsthand and coordinate the response measures. A case has been registered, and legal proceedings are underway to determine accountability.
Reports mentioned that locals protested against speeding trucks and called for stricter enforcement of traffic norms in the area, where heavy goods vehicles and civilian traffic often share narrow and congested roads. Many also demanded immediate measures to regulate truck movements during peak hours.
