In a bizarre turn of events, a thief in Puri attempted to evade arrest by jumping into a pond, creating dramatic scenes that left locals stunned. The incident took place near Atharnala on Monday and has now become the talk of the town.
According to reports, the accused had allegedly snatched money from a local resident. Following the incident, the victim lodged a complaint at the Sadar police station. Acting on the complaint, police launched an investigation and managed to trace the accused.
However, when the police team approached him near the Alamchandi temple, the thief panicked and suddenly jumped into the adjoining pond in a desperate attempt to escape custody. Eyewitnesses said the man kept floating in the water, refusing to come out despite repeated appeals by the police.
The situation continued for quite some time as police tried to calm him down. Finally, after much persuasion and assurance, the accused agreed to step out of the pond. He was immediately taken into custody.
Police later identified him as a resident of the Khandiabandh area. The dramatic visuals of a thief hiding in a pond to escape arrest quickly spread in the locality, sparking curiosity and discussions among locals.
Meanwhile, Sadar police confirmed that a case has been registered and further investigation is underway. Officers said strict action will be taken and they are also checking whether the accused is involved in other similar crimes.
The thief’s unusual act has added a strange twist to an otherwise routine police operation and highlighted the lengths to which criminals go to evade the law.
