Tension gripped the Buxi Jagabandhu Bidyadhar Autonomous College in Bhubaneswar after a clash erupted between two groups on Tuesday.

Sources said a group of senior students having allegiance to a particular political party had allegedly been trying to take some junior students into their fold. When the juniors didn’t pay any heed to them, they were being harassed. Today, the members of the first group allegedly attacked a junior student following which a clash ensued between the two groups. The members of the first group then detained three members of the other group in the HOD’s room.

However, one of the detained students somehow managed to escape and informed the police. Later, a team from Badagada Police Station rushed to the spot and rescued the detained students.

“It’s a kind of ragging. Shamim bhai and Chandra bhai attacked our friends. When I came to the rescue of our friends, they didn’t spare me as well. They are known as student leaders on the college campus. I have never heard of them harassing seniors. They always attack juniors,” alleged Soumyajit Behera, the complainant.

When contacted, lecturer Subhajit Roul said, “As we are probing the matter, I can’t say anything about it.”

Meanwhile, the police are interrogating students from both sides to ascertain the exact cause of the clash.
