A school teacher in Odisha’s Jajpur district was convicted of raping a minor girl and sentenced to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment by a special POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) court on Monday.
The accused has been identified as Mohan Bhuyan who had committed the crime in 2022.
The incident occurred at a government school in Panikoili where the teacher committed the crime. Following a thorough investigation and trial, the court delivered its verdict, relying on testimony from 16 witnesses. In addition to the jail term, the convicted teacher has been ordered to pay a fine of Rs 1.5 lakh.
“The fast-track court of special judge Abhijeet Palai had earlier sentenced the convict to 20 years in prison and compensated the victim with Rs 7 lakh in one case. Today, based on the testimonies of 16 witnesses, the convict along with getting a sentence of 20 years, has been fined Rs 1.5 lakh which will be forwarded to the victim,” said Rajiv Mohanty, special public prosecutor.
