A rift between neighbours turned into a sword fight in the Malgodam Pada area in Bolangir of Odisha. The violent altercation resulted in the death of one and left two others injured.
The deceased has been identified as Neeraj Harpal, who was attacked along with his cousins, Deba Harpal and Suraj Harpal. According to the family of the deceased, Neeraj and his associates went to a betel shop around 11:00 PM last night, where they were attacked by Deepak Kumbhar and his family.
The motive behind the attack was reportedly stated as old enmity between the two families and the Kumbhar family was always on the lookout for an opportunity to attack the Harpal family. Upon seeing Neeraj last night, the accused Deepak Kumbhar called his father and other family members. Following this, the accused and his family members attacked Neeraj and his cousins resulting in the death of Neeraj on the spot.
“Deepak Kumar is Drona Kumbhar’son, who had passed comments on my younger brother and had threatened him saying ‘I will kill you’ and when my brother asked who was he talking to, he called his family. Following which his father, mother, and older brother came over with swords and weapons,” said Suraj Harpal, older brother of the deceased.
Another brother of the deceased, Deba Harpal said, “Deepak Kumar rushed inside the betel shop and then called his father and brother to come along with weapons. He said that we were outside so his father and brother came with weapons, when my brother, Neeraj, turned around they attacked his legs. Following which my brother fell down and couldn’t do anything.”
As per sources, Bolangir SP and police visited the crime scene and launched an investigation into the matter. The police have arrested four members of the Kumbhar family including a woman, while Drona Kumbhar, head of the family is absconding.
