Tension flared at Berhampur University on Wednesday night following a clash between students and alleged outsiders during a cultural programme organised ahead of Nuakhai. Several students were injured in the incident after rival groups came face-to-face inside the campus.

According to reports, the incident took place when a group of students objected to the presence of non-students inside the university premises during the festivities.

Heated arguments soon escalated into a scuffle between rival groups, leaving multiple students injured.

The situation quickly spiralled out of control and spread tension in the university area. Later in the night, the matter took a political turn as a large number of Bhanja Bihar students, led by Sanakhemundi MLA Ramesh Jena, marched to Gopalpur police station.

The protesters staged a sit-in outside the police station, demanding immediate arrest of the accused and strict punitive measures.

They accused the authorities of negligence and alleged that the unchecked entry of outsiders had been causing repeated disturbances on the campus.

The protest created a tense situation for several hours before police officials intervened. Senior officers assured the agitators that action would be taken against those responsible. Following the assurance, the students withdrew their dharna.
