At least 12 people were injured in Ganjam district after a stray dog suspected to be rabid went on a biting spree across three villages. The incident occurred under Dharakote police limits on Wednesday, when residents of Kusharaba, Bariguda and Lakshmipur were attacked.
According to reports, the incident happened on Wednesday evening, when the dog bit villagers indiscriminately before locals managed to drive it away. In the process, several people sustained injuries.
Panic Spreads In Locality
All the injured, including men, women and children, were immediately shifted to Aska Medical College and Hospital. Doctors confirmed that they were administered anti-rabies vaccines as part of precautionary treatment. Police and veterinary officials were alerted to trace the dog and monitor further risk of infection in the area.
The incident has spread panic in the affected villages, with residents demanding urgent measures from the administration to control the stray dog menace and prevent similar outbreaks. Reports also added that officials are keeping watch on the condition of the injured, and none of them have reportedly sustained serious injuries.
Dog Brutally Thrashed To Death
In a separate case earlier this week, a youth from Jagatsinghpur district was booked for brutally killing a dog in Paradip. The incident took place in the Sandhakuda area, where the accused was caught on camera beating the animal to death with an iron rod. The video of the assault went viral, prompting swift police action.
Paradip Marine Police registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. The accused was later arrested and forwarded to court.
