At least two police personnel were crushed to death and another sustained serious injuries as a speeding hyva truck crushed a PCR van during patrolling on Cuttack-Paradip road in the wee hours of Tuesday.

According to sources, the road mishap took place near Gati Routpatna, where a sand-laden truck rammed into a PCR van of the CRRI Police Station. 

Two police personnel- reportedly one Odisha Auxiliary Police Force (OAPF) and a home guard died on the spot, while another sustained serious injuries and has been admitted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack.

The deceased have been identified as OAPF Lokanath Sabar and home guard Jagannath Mahalik.

The PCR van was completely damaged in the collision. According to initial reports, the truck was moving at high speed and crushed the police vehicle from behind.

Meanwhile, the police have arrested the driver of the truck and launched an investigation to ascertain the exact cause that led to the fatal accident.

What DCP Says

“The PCR van of the CRRI police station was patrolling at around 4.30 am when a hyva truck collided with the vehicle. Three staff were inside the patrolling vehicle at the time of accident. The driver of the truck has been arrested and further investigation into the matter is on. The health condition of the injured cop is stable now,” said Khilari Rishikesh Dnyandeo, Cuttack DCP.

CM Announces Ex-gratia

Expressing deep sorrow over the incident, Chief Minister Mohan Majhi announced financial assistance for the bereaved families. He declared an ex gratia amount of Rs 10 lakh each for the families of the deceased cops.
