Sniffer dogs to guard Odisha forests, assist in tracking bait-bombs
The Odisha Forest Department has come up with an ambitious project to rope in sniffer dogs to guard forests, sanctuaries and protect wildlife against poachers and other imminent threats.
PCCF Sushant Nanda informed that sniffer dogs would be helpful in detecting bait-bombs laid to poach elephants mostly in Hindol-Dhenkanal-Angul and other parts of the state.
“Apart from bait bombs, the sniffer dogs would also be helpful in detecting snare traps laid by poachers to hunt small animals,” said Nanda.
Nanda further informed that as an experimental basis 10 sniffer dogs would be engaged in five forest ranges in the state including Similipal, Satkosia, Debrigarh, Hindol and Athagarh.
“We are trying to procure best breed and best trained dogs from private players who will be selected after tender process,” said Nanda.
