The annual Chandan Yatra in Puri will see a notable change with the prohibition of fireworks this year. The Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) has announced a prohibition on the use of firecrackers during the annual festival, as a precautionary measure to avert any untoward incidents.

Furthermore, in a move to ensure the well-being of those participating, health insurance will be provided to both devotees and servitors involved in the yatra. Moreover, to further enhance safety, two first aid centres will be established at the outskirts of the Narendra Puskarini, the sacred pond integral to the festival.

This decision comes following the Srimandir Chhattisa Nijog meeting, aiming to prioritise safety and well-being amid the traditional celebrations.

The heightened precautions follow an unfortunate incident last year involving firecrackers, prompting temple administrators to adopt a more cautious approach this year.

Decisions by Srimandir Administration

These updates follow the recent meeting of the Srimandir Chhattisa Nijog—a traditional governing body associated with the Jagannath Temple—where various proposals were discussed. Arabinda Padhee, the Chief Administrator, confirmed the approval for the festival's preparations.

Alongside the Chandan Yatra, the schedule for other significant festivals—Niladri Mahodaya, the birthday of Lord Narasimha, and the Bhai Bauri Tithi—has also been finalized.

Scholarships and Recognition for Academic Excellence

Reflecting a commitment to educational advancement, the Shrimandir administration has announced scholarships for students from the servitor community. A sum of Rs 50,000 will be awarded to 10 students who excelled in the previous academic year. Additionally, 23 students from grades 10 and 12 will receive Rs 10,000 each as a reward for their academic achievements. This incentive aims to support and encourage scholastic dedication within the community.

A Safety-Driven Response

The decision to ban fireworks at the external Chandan Yatra comes in response to last year's incidents involving explosions, which have heightened the administration's vigilance. Prioritising safety and welfare, these measured steps illustrate a proactive approach in managing one of Puri's most revered festivals, ensuring both tradition and security are maintained.
