An inhuman incident came to light in Cuttack’s Athagarh area where police detained a woman for allegedly thrashing her stepchildren - a 13-year-old boy and a 10-year-old girl merely eating a few additional pieces of biscuits.
The children were so brutally beaten up that they had to be hospitalized. They are now undergoing treatment at Athagarh Sub Divisional Hospital.
According to sources, Sunil Kumar Nanda, a resident of Parthapur village in the Banki area has been residing in Ashok Nagar under Athagarh Police limits, with his second wife and a son and a daughter, who are born out of his first wedlock.
Sunil and his second wife had allegedly been subjecting the children to physical torture for the last several days. Today, the children were beaten up mercilessly for eating some biscuits.

The severely injured siblings somehow managed to come out of the house and were spotted by local people, who immediately informed the police and admitted the children to the Athagarh Sub Divisional Hospital.
While narrating their ordeal, the children told journalists that their father and aunty (stepmother) had been beating them almost daily. “Aunty was beating us every day with whatever she would get, be it a rolling pin or an iron spatula. Today, we managed to escape,” said the girl.
“Aunty and nana (father) were beating us. My mother is living in our uncle's house in Khordha,” said the boy.
“The boy has signs of multiple assaults. We are confirmed that he had been assaulted for a longer period. He has a blood clot in his eye and injury marks on his private part,” said Dr Lipsaprit Nayak.
On the basis of the complaint, the police detained their stepmother and are interrogating her.
Meanwhile, local residents along with the children’s uncle (elder brother of their father) demanded stringent action against Sunil and his second wife. Their uncle alleged that his younger brother had a plan to eliminate the children to take over the property.
“I have seen myself how they have been tortured. I will discuss with the police and appropriate action will definitely be taken against the guilty,” said Subashini Kabat, district child protection officer.
