The confusion surrounding the observance of Kalipuja and Diwali has cropped up again this year.

Since different ‘Panjikas’ or astrological almanacs have fixed different Amavasya ‘tithis’, there is confusion surrounding the observance of Kalipuja and Diwali. Many are confused about whether they will celebrate Diwali on October 31 or November 1.

According to astrologers, this year Shyamakali Puja will be observed on October 31 night and Payashraddha and Diwali on November 1.

“Unlike previous years, this year Payashraddha and Syamakali Puja can’t be observed on the same day. Because Kalipuja is observed on the day when Amavasya tithi falls in the night and Payashraddha is observed if the Amavasya tithi remains throughout from dawn to dusk,” said Hari Shankar Mishra, an astrologer.

‘This year, Amavasya tithi enters after 3.45 pm on October 31. It excludes the period of dawn. But, since the Amavasya tithi lasts till night, Syamakali Puja will be observed on that day. The next day (November 1), since the Amavasya tithi lasts from dawn to dusk, Payashraddha will be observed on that day,” he added.
