SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, the state’s premier health institution, commenced a screening process in search of a prospective patient for a heart transplant. The move marks preparations for the first-of-its-kind procedure to be undertaken by the hospital.

Odisha State Health Minister, Mukesh Mahaling, visited SCB and met a patient who is likely to be the first candidate scheduled for the transplant. Additionally, he also inquired about the patient’s health and discussed the procedure and its preparations with the medical team.

While talking to reporters,  Mahaling emphasized that the SCB heart transplant is slated to be a revolutionary step in Odisha's healthcare sector and reaffirmed the state government's commitment to providing advanced and superior healthcare services to the people of the state. Finally, the minister prayed to Lord Jagannath for the successful completion of the heart transplant procedure.

The complex procedure comes after Odisha’s Directorate of Medical Education and Training (DMET) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Chennai-based MGM Healthcare for facilitating the heart transplant and training the doctors in SCB.

Notably, MGM Healthcare will provide free-of-cost heart transplants for the first ten patients opting for the surgery in SCB. As such, its representatives were also present during the screening process.
