Scolded by mother for ‘excessive’ phone usage, Class 6 boy hangs himself in Odisha

An 11-year-old boy from Redhakhol in Sambalpur district, took the extreme step of taking his own life after being scolded by his mother for using the phone excessively. The distressing incident happened in the Ambedkar Nagar area of the town on Saturday evening.

The boy, named Aryan Mukhi, was found hanging from a tree near his house. Family members launched a search for him after he did not return home and found him hanging from the tree.

Sources reported that the deceased boy studied in the sixth class and was asked by his mother to focus on his studies and stop excessive usage and content consumption on his phone. However, the boy took this matter to heart and hung himself from a tree not far from his house using a saree.

Upon discovering him, family members rushed him to Redhakhol Hospital, but doctors declared him dead on arrival.

“Aryan was a decent student but had lately become addicted to mobile phones as kids of his age normally do. Yesterday, her mother reprimanded him for neglecting his studies and being hooked on the phone. The boy became so stressed over this matter that he took his own life,” said a relative of the deceased.

Incidentally, the father of the deceased boy works as an auto-rickshaw driver in the area and her mother took care of his studies. Further, the parents had hoped to get Aryan enrolled in a better school and were saving up for the same, the relative added.

Meanwhile, police took stock of the situation but have not offered any comments so far.
