The accused, identified as Mohammad Sadar, was apprehended from Bijnor district.
The case was registered on July 4 at the Bhubaneswar Cyber Police Station after a complaint was filed by the victim, who had been lured by promises of high returns through a fraudulent investment opportunity shared on WhatsApp.
Following the investigation, a police team was dispatched to Uttar Pradesh. After a thorough search operation, Sadar was arrested and produced before a court. Police revealed that Rs 30 lakh had been directly transferred to the accused’s bank account.
During the arrest, three mobile phones, four SIM cards, and several digital documents were seized. Additionally, two fake websites used by the accused to run the scam were taken down.
Sadar, who holds a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Applications, is reportedly involved in similar cyber frauds across Odisha and several other Indian states.
This arrest brings the total number of cyber fraudsters nabbed in September alone to eight, according to Bhubaneswar DCP.
“The accused was arrested in Bijnor of Uttar Pradesh. He was brought to Odisha after the arrest and was forwarded to court today. The case was registered on July 4 this year. During a detailed probe, it was known that the victim man had been duped of Rs 98 lakh in June through a WhatsApp group,” Bhubaneswar DCP, Jagmohan Meena, said.
“The complainant had received a link through WhatsApp, and he was subsequently lured to invest money on the promise of very high returns. Following which, the victim man had invested around Rs 98 lakh and was cheated,” the DCP stated.
