The rampant use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers in agricultural practices has become a growing concern in the state, leading to the degradation of soil quality and a rise in severe health issues, including cancer. This alarming issue was raised during the Question Hour in the Odisha Assembly by Opposition Deputy Leader Prasanna Acharya. The senior BJD leader wanted to know about the steps taken by the Odisha government to promote organic and bio-farming as a sustainable alternative.

Highlighting the adverse impact of excessive pesticide use, Acharya pointed out that districts like Bolangir and the undivided Sambalpur region have reported an increase in cancer cases, which many experts attribute to the overuse of pesticides. The Opposition expressed deep concern over the deteriorating health conditions and demanded immediate action from the government to curb the indiscriminate use of harmful chemicals in farming.

Odisha Government’s Response

In response, the State Agriculture Minister acknowledged the issue and assured the House that the state government is taking proactive steps to mitigate the risks associated with chemical farming. He stated that to address the growing health and environmental concerns, the Odisha government is prioritizing the implementation of the ‘Balabhadra Organic Mission’, which aims to promote sustainable agricultural practices and reduce dependency on synthetic fertilizers and pesticides.

Further elaborating on the government’s commitment to organic farming, Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan, speaking on behalf of the Deputy Chief Minister and Agriculture Minister, assured that significant efforts are being made to expand organic farming areas across the state. He emphasized that the government is determined to encourage farmers to adopt bio-farming techniques by providing necessary financial assistance, training, and infrastructure support.

Experts believe that a shift towards organic farming will not only improve soil fertility but also enhance the overall quality of agricultural produce, ensuring better health for consumers. The government is expected to introduce more policies and incentives to accelerate this transition and safeguard the well-being of farmers and the general public.
