Red alert: Extremely heavy rains likely in Odisha districts on June 30

IMD forecasts extremely heavy rains in Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, and Balasore on June 30, with red alerts issued. Orange and yellow alerts for other districts till July 6. Southwest Monsoon has been active over Odisha and fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea along and off Odisha coast till July 1.

With a low-pressure area over Northwest Bay of Bengal (BoB) and adjoining West Bengal & Bangladesh coasts, and associated cyclonic circulation slowly moving west-northwestwards across North Odisha, very heavy to extremely heavy rain with thunderstorms, lightning and gusty surface wind are very likely to occur in four Odisha districts during next 24 hours, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasted on Sunday.

IMD issued Red alert in these four districts only for June 30, and Orange and Yellow alerts in several other districts of the State for next seven days (i.e till July 6).

Southwest Monsoon has been active over Odisha and fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea along and off Odisha coast till July 1.

In its mid-day bulletin, the IMD regional centre mentioned, “The east-west trough now runs from the upper air cyclonic circulation over south Rajasthan and adjoining north Gujarat to the cyclonic circulation associated with the low pressure area over northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining West Bengal and Bangladesh coasts across Madhya Pradesh, north Chhattisgarh and north Odisha between 3.1 Km and 5.8 Km above mean sea level tilting southward with height.”

Warnings and forecasts in Odisha for June 30

For Sunday (Valid up to 0830 hrs IST of 30.06.2025)

Light to moderate rain or thundershower is very likely to occur at most places over the districts of Odisha.

Red Warning (Take Action): Very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph is very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, and Balasore.

Orange Warning (Be Prepared): Very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph are very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Deogarh, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Angul, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, and Bhadrak.

Yellow Warning (Be Updated): Heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph are very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Nuapada, Bolangir, Subarnapur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Ganjam, Bargarh, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Nayagarh, Boudh, Khordha, Puri, and Gajapati.
