One month to Odisha train tragedy; memories of horrific accident still fresh in minds of people

Even though one month has passed now, the memories of the horrific train mishap are still fresh in the minds of passengers, who survived the accident, and locals who had launched a massive rescue operation.

On June 2, 2023, Odisha witnessed one of the deadliest train mishaps in the country. At least 294 passengers were killed in the tragic train accident involving Coromandel Express, a goods train at Bahanaga station in Balasore district.

Even though one month has passed now, the memories of the horrific train mishap are still fresh in the minds of passengers, who survived the accident, and locals who had launched a massive rescue operation.

The entire country and world was shocked after visuals started to emerge from the train accident spot. Within no time, local residents rushed to the spot, began a massive rescue operation, and soon specialised units of the state government chipped in.

The new relay signal system has been made operational. However, the Indian Railways will not make public the CRS probe report on the Balasore triple train accident to ensure that there is no "influence or interference" on the CBI's ongoing investigation in the case, senior officials told PTI on Friday.

While there has been no official confirmation, some sources said the Commission of Railway Safety (CRS) informed in its report that the accident occurred due to human error on the part of on-duty officials in the Signalling and Telecom Department as well as the Traffic Department.
