A man died and a police officer was injured when a gas tanker rammed into a police vehicle during a routine check on NH-16 in Odisha’s Jajpur on Monday.

The accident occurred near the Sathipur-Brajanagar intersection on National Highway-16 under Panikoili police station limits in Jajpur district.

During a police vehicle check, the gas container collided with a police patrol vehicle in a high-intensity impact leading to the tragic death of a motorcyclist on the spot, while also leaving one police officer injured.

The deceased has been identified as Ranjan Kumar Jena, a resident of the local Madhapur area while the injured police officer has been identified as Sulochana Behera.

Reports mentioned that the truck was speeding before veering off course and was heading from Balasore to Cuttack.

“A vehicle suddenly braked following which the gas truck took a sharp left turn and hit the police patrol vehicle. A local man had parked his bike and was talking with a police officer when the truck hit them, leading to the former’s death,” said Subas Dhal, an eyewitness.

Following the accident, there was a brief period of tension and unrest at the scene which caused a disruption in traffic flow.

Meanwhile, the deceased’s uncle, Ashok Das alleged that delay in the motorcyclist’s treatment led to his death. “Police took away their staff swiftly but did not check the condition of my nephew. He may have bled to his death,” he alleged.
