Odisha's primary education sector is set to embrace a significant initiative with the introduction of 'Shishu Vatika' beginning on April 2.
As part of the New Education Policy 2020, this programme has been tailored to enhance early childhood education across Odisha.
The announcement has been made by Odisha School and Mass Education Minister Nityananda Gond on the social media platform X (earlier known as Twitter).
"As per the new Education Policy 2020, 'Shishu Batika' is going to be started in all primary schools of the state. From next April 2, 'Khadi Chhuan' festival will be organized in all primary schools," read the post.
Enthusiasm Around 'Khadi Chhuan'
The commencement of 'Shishu Vatika' will feature a traditional event known as the 'Khadi Chhuan' festival, which includes a ceremonial chalk initiation. This cultural practice signifies the formal start of education for young learners.
Focus on Learning Environment
Targeting children aged five and above, 'Shishu Vatika' aims to create a nurturing and supportive environment conducive to learning. Parents and educators are hopeful that this initiative will lay a firm foundation for the educational journey of young students.

Odisha government has issued a letter in this regard to all the district collectors.
"As per the mandate of the National Education Policy-2020, all the primary schools of the State will open an additional class called 'Sishu Vatika' where the children in the age group of 5- 6 years will be admitted for pre-school education. Further, commencing from the academic year 2025 -26, the age of the child for admission in Class-I shall be 6+ years as on 1st September of that Academic Year," read the letter.
