Continuing the intense chill and cold that set in at the start of the New Year, as many as five places in Odisha recorded temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius with the lowest of 4 degrees and 4.5 degrees Celsius gripping G. Udayagiri of Kandhamal and Semiliguda of Koraput districts, respectively, on Sunday night.
A weather report shared by the Bhubaneswar Centre of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) stated that five other major settlements either slipped below or hovered at 10 degrees Celsius. Among them, Phulbani witnessed the lowest minimum temperature of 7 degrees Celsius. Rourkela (7.2), Jharsuguda (7.7), and Daringbadi (9) followed thereafter.
On that same night, Bhubaneswar witnessed the mercury plummet to 13.2 degrees whereas Cuttack recorded 13.5 degrees Celsius.
The weather department, however, maintained its previous predictions that the cold wave conditions are likely to prevail for the next 4 to 5 days with no large change in temperature expected to be observed over most places in the state.
Further, reports of dense fog were received from several interior districts. As per the IMD, places in Paradip were the most affected by fog as visibility fell to about 50 meters or less.
“The cold has turned extremely unbearable in the past few days. Dense fog keeps the sun hidden until very late in the morning. Students and officer-goers are also facing difficulties,” said a resident of Bonai.

Incidentally, cold wave conditions returned to the state on January 17 after a brief rise in temperature owing to western disturbances. However, since their onset, temperatures have dropped sharply in many places, with the state capital witnessing the most noticeable effect.
