Odisha has experienced an unusually high amount of rainfall during the pre-monsoon period this year, recording 86% more precipitation than the seasonal average. According to data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), between March 1 and May 31, the state received 238.6 mm of rainfall, as against the normal 128.6 mm for this period.

This sharp deviation from the norm has affected at least 21 districts, where rainfall levels have been recorded at more than 60% above average.

Further, the excess rain has not only caught the attention of meteorologists but is also expected to influence agricultural planning and local water management efforts in the coming weeks.

Monsoon Touches Odisha Early

The southwest monsoon made its onset over Odisha on May 28 this year, earlier than usual, marking the third instance of such early monsoon activity in the past few decades, with similar occurrences recorded on May 28, 1999, and May 25, 2009. The early arrival of the monsoon is expected to bring even more rainfall in the days ahead.

June Forecast: More Rain on the Horizon

Looking ahead, the IMD has predicted that Odisha may receive up to 106% of the normal rainfall during the month of June. This indicates the possibility of even heavier downpours across the state, with potential implications for agriculture, urban drainage, and flood preparedness.

Meanwhile, the state was spared from major rain and havoc after a low-pressure system turned into a deep depression last week. However, it changed course and headed for the Bangladesh-West Bengal coast instead, bringing thunderstorms and rainfall to scattered areas in Odisha.
