A lecturer, who was undergoing treatment for the last 9 months after being brutally attacked by one of his students, succumbed at a hospital in Burla late Tuesday night. The deceased, identified as Amit Barik, was the lecturer of PKSS Degree College at Katapalli in Jharsuguda.
As per reports, on February 22, 2023, Rajesh Sahish, a Plus-II second-year student, came late to Amit Barik's class. The lecturer asked the student about the reason for the delay following which there was an argument. Infuriated, Rajesh attacked Amit, leaving the latter critically injured.
Amit was immediately rushed to Jharsuguda district headquarters hospital. However, he was shifted to VIMSAR, Burla, after his condition worsened.
Amit’s cousin, Anirudh Barik said, "Amit was taking English class. As the student came late on February 22, 2023, my brother had told the student to meet the principal. Angered by it, the student attacked my brother and hit his head. My brother fainted on the spot.”
Nirmal Mohapatra, SDPO, Jharsuguda, said, “The incident had taken place on February 22. Following a complaint in this regard from principal Krushnarani Bhoi, police registered a case under section 307(IPC) and the accused was arrested. After the death of the lecturer, we will refer the case to the court and section 302(IPC) will be applied. The accused is out on bail currently.”
