Odisha has 50000 AIDS cases, Ganjam tops list with 20000 infections

Odisha has reported a significant decrease in acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) cases, informed State Health Minister Mukesh Mahaling on Sunday.

Speaking to media persons, Mahaling said that Odisha currently has around 50,000 individuals living with AIDS. Ganjam district remains the most affected area with about 20,000 cases. 

Comparatively, Sonapur has the fewest cases, recording approximately 50, the minister informed, adding that Odisha has set a target to eliminate the disease by 2030.

As per the HIV Estimations 2019, nationally, there was an estimated 23.48 lakh (17.98 lakh – 30.98 lakh) PLHIV in 2019.

Maharashtra was estimated to have the highest number of PLHIV (3.96 lakh), followed by Andhra Pradesh (3.14 lakh), Karnataka (2.69 lakh), Uttar Pradesh (1.61 lakh), Telangana (1.58 lakh), Tamil Nadu (1.55 lakh), Bihar (1.34 lakh) and Gujarat (1.04 lakh).
The states of West Bengal, Delhi, Punjab, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and Haryana contributed another 18% of the total PLHIV size. Overall, 90% of PLHIV estimates were from these 15 States.

Asked about the implementation of Ayushman Bharat Yojana in the State, the minister said, “The scheme will be launched in Odisha soon and around 3.5 crore people of the State will receive benefit from it.”

“With the implementation of the scheme, the beneficiaries can avail healthcare facilities at 27000 hospitals across the country,” he added.
