Odisha govt directs colleges, universities to set up ‘Shaktishree’ empowerment cells by August 25

The Higher Education Department of the Odisha government has issued a directive to immediately establish 'Shaktishree' empowerment cells. 

Official letters have reportedly been sent to the Vice-Chancellors of all universities, as well as to the principals of government and private colleges in the state, in this regard.

As per the instructions in the letter, steps must be taken to select Shaktishree Sathi (women representatives) by August 20. 
Additionally, one female student representing each class must be chosen by August 14, with the representative being from the final year of either undergraduate (UG) or postgraduate (PG) courses.

The order further states that by August 25, the Shaktishree empowerment cell should be operational, along with the commencement of a six-day self-defence training program.

Earlier on July 19, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Majhi had announced the launch of 'Shaktishree', a comprehensive initiative aimed at ensuring the safety and security of women students and staff across all higher education campuses in the state.

The announcement was made in the wake of the death of a 20-year-old student by self-immolation over an alleged sexual harassment incident at Fakir Mohan Autonomous College in Balasore.

Shaktishree will have eight focus points, such as Shaktishree Empowerment Cell with a girl student as Shaktishree Sathi and a woman lecturer. Furthermore, the Collector will appoint five 'Shakti Associates' to support the initiative. An intensive six-day training session for participants is also planned.
